Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Black History Month

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Black History Month:

“Throughout Canada’s history, Black leaders, innovators, and communities have made strong contributions to our national legacy. In the early 1600s, Matthieu De Costa arrived on our shores as a translator; in 1895, Eddie Martin, a pioneering hockey player, invented the slap shot; Oscar Peterson’s incredible jazz piano, enjoyed around the world for decades, just to name a few examples. Generations of Black Canadians have woven the fabric of our Canadian story. They have and continue to make Canada a better place.

“Without a doubt, Canada has been incredibly blessed by the achievements and accomplishments of Black Canadians. Despite unbelievable opposition fueled by racism and hate, Black Canadians have persevered. They have overcome tremendous obstacles while demonstrating patience and grace.

“Every February, we honour this incredible history. We acknowledge the trials and triumphs of Black Canadians. As communities across Canada celebrate Black History Month, I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the far-reaching contributions of Black Canadians. May each of us take time to honour this history as a crucial part of Canada’s growth as a nation that extends freedom and equality to all.”
